Japão, principalmente das regiões de Uji (Kyoto), Yame (Fukuoka) e Asahina (Shizuoka).
Essas áreas têm o clima, a altitude e a umidade ideais para o cultivo sombreado que o Gyokuro requer.
O nome “Gyokuro” (玉露) significa literalmente “orvalho de jade”, referindo-se à cor verde-esmeralda do chá.
Tipo de planta
Camellia sinensis var. sinensis, a mesma espécie de todos os chás verdes japoneses.
As cultivares mais usadas são Saemidori, Asahi, Okumidori e Yabukita — escolhidas pela doçura e aroma.
Método de cultivo e tipo de chá
Chá verde de sombra (shade-grown tea) — as plantas são cobertas com palha ou redes cerca de 20 dias antes da colheita, o que:
- reduz a fotossíntese,
- aumenta a produção de clorofila, aminoácidos (L-teanina) e teor de cafeína,
- e dá origem a um chá doce, umami e aromático.
Após a colheita, as folhas são vaporizadas, enroladas e secas, preservando a frescura e o verde intenso.
Propriedades químicas e nutricionais
- Altíssimo teor de L-teanina → induz relaxamento e foco mental.
- Rico em catequinas (EGCG) → forte ação antioxidante.
- Contém vitaminas A, C, E e do complexo B, além de potássio, magnésio e fluoreto natural.
